We will be in Catania at the end of our trip and would like to see/explore Etna. We are not sure if we should just independently drive and take the cable car or take a tour from Catania. Wondering if anyone has done this. This will be April 18th ish. Thanks all.
You can drive on your own up to the Rifugio Sapienza. For higher elevations you could take the cable car which goes higher. But to go above 2500mt, even on foot, you need to take a guided tour. For safety reason you must be accompanied by an alpine guide/vulcanologist to reach the top. There is still snow in April on the top, so be prepared.
