we will be traveling to Sicily in late April, staying in Catania and want to see Mt. Etna. Any suggestions on tours, guides, best way to do this?
Also, can we spend just one morning in Taormina and see most of it? Thanks.
Lots of Sicily today! I've been to Sicily twice, both times for two weeks, and wasn't ready to go home. This never happened to me before! I spent a week in Taormina in a rented apartment, and used that as a base for touring the entire East side of the Island. I guess you COULD see the Greek Theatre in Taormina in a morning, however. It depends on whether you want to stay in a big city or if you'd rather be in a more 'laid back' setting. Last year my group met a nice Australian girl who'd done all of Sicily and said Catania was her least favorite city, but that was her opinion.
I hired a private guide for a day-trip to Mt. Etna and a Winery tour (Gambino Vini) and enjoyed every minute of it. The Apartment rental and tour was via: legendofsicily.com They also broker BnB's,
Gambino Vini has a face book page. As you will see it is heavenly! Those crazy Sicilians have a real love affair with their Volcano and Gambino Vini posts pictures of her when she's erupting, which is frequent!
There are big busses that take people to Mt. Etna, and if you are staying in a hotel in Catania your hotel should be able to make this arrangement for you. If you were basing out of Taormina, I'd use legendofsicily for the day-trip including both the Winery and the Volcano.
Susie, if you are staying at a hotel in Catania, the front desk will have info on tours to Mt. Etna. Our hotel in Taormina had leaflets on bus tours to lots of places.
