Movie - The Truffle Hunters

Saw the film "The Truffle Hunters" over the weekend. Such a lovely, sweet film especially if you love dogs and Italy! It is a documentary that explores the other-worldly life of a group of elderly italian men along with their canine companions who travel the forest in pursuit of truffles. The scenes were so beautiful and at times the landscapes almost appeared as paintings.

The world of truffle hunting has grown more competitive and greed is now a driving force. The juxtaposition of the men and their dogs and the pure joy and love of the chase against the new greedy business interests is a bit heartbreaking. I have never had truffles but judging by the cost they must be delicious. I highly recommend the movie if you need an italian fix at this time when none of us can travel.

Lola, I live in New Jersey and saw it the old fashioned way -- at an actual theatre in the town of Red Bank. It is playing in only select theaters at the moment and I couldn't find it on any streaming platform. It is shortlisted for an Oscar in the Documentary Feature Academy category so it might become more available in terms of streaming if it were to win. Take care -- hope you can see it!

Wow, thanks for this post. Our local "art" theater usually has first crack at Oscar nominees, (especially in the shorts category, though) so I'll keep an eye out for it.

We haven't been to a movie in over a year, but our local favorite place is being scrupulously careful, so if they're showing this we'll probably head over there.

Actually, it occurs to me that they may well already have shown it, but they've only been open again a few months, so maybe not. I'll look for it.

We will take a look, thanks for the review. A friend of our’s, who lives in Ivanic Grad, Croatia, retired last year and purchased a truffle hunting dog. I’m not sure which breed. He has been training the dog, not sure what that entails. I’m going to e-mail him to check out the movie too. Will make our next visit interesting.

The film hit our local art theater last Friday, and we went to see it this afternoon. We enjoyed it, and the more we think and talk about it, the better we like it. It is a documentary, but leaves a lot of blank spaces. The parts that hit home the hardest are about these very old men (upper 80s, some of them) and their dogs. Their sheer love of nature, tramping with their dogs through the forest, is very telling. The final scene will make you laugh and cheer, always a great way to end a movie.

Jane,
So glad you were able to see the movie and that you posted your great review. Yes, the movie stayed with me for a while after seeing it. There was such a purity of love in the relationships between the men and their dogs as well as their love for their "sport". It was just the antidote for the year 2020!
