Most scenic route from Florence to Siena.

Hi, my wife and I will be driving from Florence to Siena to Trequanda at the end of October. We will be picking up our car at the Via Forlanini location for Europcar in Florence. At the Via Michelin website I was able to get a route out of Florence by taking the Ponte alla Vittoria over the Arno. I think we want to take the SR222 to Siena. Does someone have any thoughts on this and does anyone have a good way to get from where we will be crossing the Arno to the SR222?
Thank you in advance for any help with this.

From via Forlanini you could get to the airport, then the motorway in few minutes. You enter the motorway direction Roma and you exit at Firenze sud (toll is a couple of euros). From Firenze sud follow road signs and you are on SR222.

This is the easy way, skipping the city traffic (and the Forlanini location has a lot of traffic as there are long term works for a new tram line, it may even be difficult to spot the Europcar garage, two days ago they were building scaffolding in front of it).

The difficult way: reach the viali around the city center and cross the river at Ponte S. Niccolò.

Intermediate difficulty: reach the viali, cross the river at Ponte alla Vittoria, follow direction for Siena and you find yourself on SR2. You exit town on SR2, at Falciani you turn left direction Greve in Chianti where you finally reach SR222.

Personally, I would drive the fastest possible route (motorway direction Roma to exit Val di Chiana, then Sinalunga and Trequanda). You will have lots of scenery in Trequanda.

Instead of going all the way to Firenze Nord, as lachera suggested, there is also the alternate way of going toward the airport, but then, instead of following the green signs toward Prato-Pistoia toward the Firenze Nord entrance on the A1, just before the airport veer to the left and follow the directions to:

VIADOTTO ALL'INDIANO (cross the Arno on the Indiano bridge) a viaduct that takes you to a freeway junction with the:
RACCORDO FIRENZE-PISA-LIVORNO (turn right toward Pisa/Livorno and take that freeway for a very short time)
the follow the green signs (turn right) to the entrance to the toll freeway:
A1- (ROMA - BOLOGNA)
pick up the ticket at toll booth at the entrance (that A1 entrance is called Firenze-Scandicci)
Go toward ROMA
Exit at FIRENZE SUD (the second exit from where you enter)
At Firenze Sud exit, pay toll and immediately after the toll booths turn right toward Siena SR 222. You will pass in front of the Sheraton Florence which you can see from the toll booths.
Then follow the SR222 all the way to Siena.

The above route cuts quite a few km over going from the airport all the way on the A11 toward Prato-Pistoia, then catch the A1 at the Firenze Nord entrance.

The Europcar is in an underground garage. Since I presume the taxi will take you there, it won't be a problem to find it, as taxi drivers certainly know where it is. It's right past the roundabout with via di Novoli coming from viale Redi, right in front of the COOP supermarket. Forlanini is the tree lined street. To go toward the airport, when you come up from the underground garage turn right on via Forlanini, then left at the street light on viale Guidoni. Plenty of signs to the airport.

Hi Roberto, thank you for this route suggestion. We followed your advice on where to stay for our last night in Florence before flying home, the Hotel Casci. It looks wonderful. Thank you for this.
I have been studying your route suggestion on getting to SR222. I think I get it now. I am sticking it into my Garmin and we will see how it goes.
Again, many thanks for this. Your detail is very much appreciated.
