Most Efficient Way to Get From Rome to Positano?

Hi there! My husband, two children (ages 11 and 14 by the time we travel) and I are heading to Rome and the Amalfi Coast this July. I'm wondering what's the most efficient way to get from Rome to Positano? I was thinking of taking a high-speed train to Salerno and then catching a ferry to Positano. Are the ferries pretty reliable? I know it will be quite crowded during July.

Side note: After our stay in Positano, we will be staying in Sorrento and then heading to Naples so I thought coming in via Salerno would be good. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Regarding your side note, driving from the south, we stopped one night in Salerno, en route to Sorrento the next day. That was like bookending the Amalfi! It was an enjoyable stopover, and would’ve been great if we’d had more time for a longer stay. On our way to Salerno, we were able to stop at the tremendous Greek temples and the museum at Paestum. That was well worth the visit, in case you worked out a way to get to Paestum while you were in the general area.

We did the fast train to Salerno and ferry to Positano. It’s spectacular seeing the Coastline doing that. A lovely highlight seeing Positano from the sea. The ferries are very reliable. But they won’t run in inclement rough weather, so have a Plan B just in case. My plan was to take the bus from Salerno to Positano. I don’t remember the details, but I knew which bus I needed to take, the time and where to walk there from the train station. Thankfully I didn’t need to do that. Enjoy!

Yes I second thus
Fast train to Salerno
Walk to the left and down the hill
Ferry to Positano

Easy peasy!! Just did this in September

Look for deals on the train ( sign up for emails) italo just had 40 percent off ( although they have filed for baby protection)

There's nothing wrong with your plan, but you should also take into consideration that Positano's harbor requires smaller ferries than, say, Sorrento. That reduces capacity, and you're going in high season. In the past, I have had trouble downloading the ferry schedules I want, due to (perhaps) non-existent IT departments at the ferry companies. I don't know if there is more than one independent ferry company in Salerno.

I have not personally taken the bus from Salerno to Positano, but I believe that it requires a change in Amalfi.

You might consider your entire stay in making travel decisions, for example whether you are taking other ferry rides, or visiting other towns during the vacation. I trust you already know that you cannot wake up in Positano and fly home from Rome the same day.

We really enjoyed our 2 nights in Salerno
It would be a shame to be there and not see the fabulous temples at Paestum

I read it on another forum that they were in financial problems.
I also have tickets.

I think if they were they would still operate anyhow like condor and Alitalia 🤷‍♀️

Based on your comments I have gone back to all my usual sources and double checked, and still find no mention of financial peril at NTV Italo.

by the way, Alitalia is no longer operating and people are trying to get refunds - and having a very hard time. If you look back through recent posts you will see stories of that.

Thank you everyone for your feedback and suggestions. We will plan for a backup option should the ferries not run from Salerno to Positano. I haven't read any news about Italo filing for bankruptcy so I hope that remains the case, as we used them on our last trip to Italy and found their trains very comfortable. I will continue to monitor the news before booking tickets. I checked and right now, tickets are only available through mid-June and we won't be traveling until mid-July.

Thanks again! Looking forward to our visit very much after postponing this trip from the summer of 2020.

The WRONG info about Italotreno posted above really should be deleted.

That's because of the Summer timetable change that happens by the second Sunday in June each year. Subscribe to Italo's newsletter, when they start mailing Summer discount codes it means they have uploaded the 2022 Summer Schedules.
