My future husband and I will only be in Rome for 2 days (including the day we fly in to Italy) at the front end of our trip and only 1 day at the end, and really want to cover as much ground as possible while still having time to explore on our own. Does anyone have any suggestions for a tour company that gets the basics covered (and is not insanely expensive)?
I would suggest doing it on your own with an audio guide. There are some really good audio guides that will take you through the city and the sites yet allow you to go at your own pace. The ones I like are from pocketvox. Also, you can book a tour of the Vatican museums on your own at their website: http://biglietteriamusei.vatican.va/musei/tickets/do?weblang=en&do Donna

Rick Steves has a "Rome in a Day" itinerary here http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinations/italy/rome3.htm. With only one day in Rome, I'm not sure I'd prioritize teh Vatican Museums. If they are important to you, go. If not, see St. Peter's Basilica (use Ricks' audio tour for MP3) and move on. Take his Night Walk Across Rome or Dolce Vita Stroll, savoring the experience. That will be your "explore on our own" time. Try to stay in the center near Piazza Navona so you are close to most sights. Buon viaggio!
