Most convenient way to get from Venice to San Remo

I have altered my vacation plans dramatically, and now find myself flying into Venice which is no longer convenient. Is Mestre the closest train station to Marco Polo airport? I've looked into car rental, however, the quote I'm getting is just shy of $400 for a one day rental and drop off fee.

I appreciate your input.

Thanks,

Yes, Venezia Mestre is the closest train station to Marco Polo airport. Trenitalia shows several train runs to San Remo from Mestre. Journey times range from 6hrs14min to 9hrs13min depending on the run you choose, the amount of train changes on the run and wait times on the train changes.

From Mestre, you are 327 miles away from San Remo. www.michelin.com shows that the drive will take 6hrs. Fuel and toll costs will be an extra 102Euro. I think that you will find that there isn't too much rental car business beyond Genoa and Savona which might explain the high quote you are getting. I looked at AutoEurope, which is a broker, and they would not show a return location in San Remo. I also tried Hertz and same thing. Google car rentals in San Remo and both Avis and Hertz show up. Perhaps they are local franchises. Just don't know.

With good planning, you just might go for the 6.0hr train ride and avoid the rental car expense and hassles.

Fly into Nice, France, rent at the airport or catch the train there, onto Sanremo. Justa thought.

Yes, this is a good option. My ultimate destination is France - 2 nights in Eze to start.
