Most accurate weather app or site for Italy?

Hi forum readers,

I’m leaving for Italy in a week and have been watching the weather. My first three nights were supposed to be at Stresa, but the weather looks miserable, so I switched those days to Cremona. Yesterday, I switched them to Florence. I’m trying to avoid days of rain, but at least Florence could be more indoor, small museums or a cooking class, if needed. I don’t want to be too far away to avoid a long train ride to Pavia.

What weather site do you recommend for the most accurate forecast for northern Italy? Any other city option that might be a better choice? Thanks!

Hi Jean! I’m sure your trip will be great. I use the Il Meteo app. Comes with too many ads unfortunately, but it tracks well with the real weather I experience. I especially like the hour by hour forecasts, as they are usually bang on predicting when the rain will start and stop during the day.

Other than that, well, I hope your raincoat search was successful ;). Have a great time.

Thanks so much, Nelly!

The recent coat inquiry is for the December Christmas Market trip, and I bought a very nice, very warm one. : )

but remember, forecasts aren't terribly reliable until 1 or 2 days out, if that. I would come up with indoor and outdoor activities in each place you will be to pivot. I mean, if you are in within daytrip distance of these locations with outdoor things, you can pivot it becomes awesome!

Thank you Jean for the question and Nelly for the answer. We'll be in region soon too but won't be able to pivot to avoid the rain the way Jean is doing.

They all use the same data sources, which, for Italy, are the ECMWF and the Italian Air Force Meteorological Service. They might also integrate some privately owned stations and sensors, like Wunderground does.

Il Meteo.it is the most used by Italians, but Accuweather, Wunderground, etc. give you more or less the same information.

I use Il Meteo when I’m there and have always found it to be accurate.
Have a great trip!

  • For real time, Storm Radar app is very accurate, you can see the storms coming and watch them move across the area. The app is free and great for planning day to day activities.
  • For forecasting a month out we use accuweather mentioned by Roberto but always revisit the forecast shortly before our trip.
  • When deciding between towns to visit at certain times of the year I like the website shared by Mr. E. You can compare multiple cities against each other to see which has the best weather. Ideal for planning the route. https://weatherspark.com/compare/y/84771/Comparison-of-the-Average-Weather-in-Budapest Have a great trip Jean!

Sorry to see that Stresa is off the route for you...I know you were looking forward to that. Hopefully whichever route you take, you have rainbows and sunshine along your way! I have found that the weather app on my iphone usually gives accurate forecasts, but in today's weather world, it can change from day to day.

Susanking39, thank you! I’m happy to say Stresa is back in my itinerary. Yeah! My flight changed to arrive in the evening, so the first evening of rain will just be in Milan - likely sleeping! Then it’s up to Stresa for two days. I had both nights at Regina Palace Hotel but switched the second night to Boutique Hotel Elvezia - a favorite of mine out on tiny Isola Bella. It’s the definition of tranquility! (Heart). Practical to switch hotels? No. Am I happy with that decision? Absolutely!

Stresa had heavy rain the day before I arrived. I was actually stuck near CDG an extra day with a cancelled flight. So, I had beautiful weather the entire 2-day weekend in Stresa! Monday morning as I Ieft, the rain was returning.
