So tell me if I'll really enjoy sitting out on the terrace of our hotel in the evenings as I plan.... (and am paying extra for the privilege of doing). Will I be dousing myself with bug spray to make it possible? (There's always hope that Italian mosquitos won't like Minnesota blood as much as the local critters seem to!)
Perhaps a citronella candle would help. Your hotel might be able to provide one. I think Venetian mosquitoes have very sophisticated palates.
Hmmm, in 8 Julys and augusts I don't remember the little monsters. There is a plug in repellent that works great in the room but I have never used it in Venice, only Assisi. OK, maybe the red wine kept them away!?! Skin So Soft works really well. On you, not in you!
I'm trying to figure out where the mosquitoes in Venice breed since the water is brackish and the tide washes in and out twice a day.
Commute from Mestre?
If they are coming from Mestre, those mosquitoes could probably find lodging in Venice for not much more than they're paying to stay in Mestre. :-D
Hey! You're going to Venice! If the bugs are free don't complain! No, really, you should be fine.
Buy plenty of garlic, mince it to a paste and spread it all over your body. Then eat even more garlic, preferably raw, but even cooked will work. When you hear a 'zzzz' near your face, burp.
Garlic is known to keep away blood sucking monsters.
Ok.. So lots of wine in my glass, a little garlic behind my ears, a citronella rinse in my hair- and I'm set! I can do that!!!
They never bother my husband here at home, maybe it'll be my turn for peace in Venice!
I've never seen a mosquito in Venice proper...just out on the Lido and the other less inhabited islands in the lagoon.
We were in Venice at the end of August last year and didn't have any problems whatsoever with mosquitos (and they always seem to be attracted to me). It wasn't until we got to the Cinque Terre that we had a problem with the little pests. I was surprised that we didn't encounter mosquitos in Venice but luckily we didn't! I personally would pay a little extra for a terrace that you can enjoy at night. You will likely be walking a lot every day and it will probably be very hot in late July so you might enjoy returning to your hotel after dinner and resting your feet on the terrace while enjoying the evening and perhaps a little wine or gelato!! Sound like heaven to me! Have a great trip!
Wow do I feel better. Thanks for all the replies. I was contemplating switching to a less expensive accommodation. Didn't want to pay extra for a beautiful terrace overlooking the canal- just to admire it from INSIDE! Really looking forward to sitting and relaxing between all the walking and touring. Thanks again- I really appreciate everyone's advice (and the humor)!!!
Depends on the time of year. Don't remember them in September, but in May they were out in force. Perhaps it was the hotel's fault as they were very diligent in keeping the potted plants and flower boxes well watered.
