Mosquitos in Venice

How bad are the mosquitos in Venice in June?

We were there 5 years ago in June no problem with mosquitoes. Actually we’re going back this coming June. Maybe will bump into you. My wife is A mosquito magnet. And she had no problems.

Been to Venice several times and never had a problem. Of course conditions do change so nothing is a sure bet.

We found that the problem is that there are no screens on the windows in the Venice hotels. We were in Venice in mid-April, a few years ago, and our hotel was right on a canal. If it is too early to turn on the air conditioning, ( seems regulated) then you need to have the windows open. Then Buzz, buzz, munch, munch....

We were there in August last year and had a/c. No issues with mosquitos at all. And we had brought repellant just in case.

I was there in June and again in late August. I had the windows shut in my hotel room, but one found its way inside because I had a few bites on my forehead the next morning. On the August trip, my daughter must have been tastier because I didn’t get any, but she had several. I also saw a few people with some bites on their legs during our trip. The mosquitoes aren’t attacking; just keep your windows shut at night.

The hotel room had a sealed mosquito repellent wipe to use, if needed.

I've been in Venice for about 7 days. I haven't seen or heard a mosquito. I am not very attractive to them, but the friend traveling with me on this part of my trip does have a big problem with mosquitoes. She hasn't been bitten so far. Our apartment is the rare one that has screens, which is certainly not hurting. We've been out till 6, 7 or 8 PM every night but not much later than that. We've been heading out between 8:30 and 9:30 most mornings.

4 years ago we spent the last week of September through mid-October traveling from Padua to Rome. Mosquitos were definitely an issue for us. Both of us brought one small unscented Off mosquito spray and we were glad we did! The mosquitos we encountered left particularly itchy bites and seemed more vicious than any we'd seen before.

We did find plenty of mosquitos during our evening visits to Scrovegni Chapel. Our repellent came in particularly handy while we waited outdoors in the somewhat cool evening air for the extended evening reservations. I did notice other visitors slapping and swatting and wished I had enough repellent for everyone.

We used the AC in Venice when our room was being invaded by mosquitos and the window had no screen. It was also warm enough several times to justify use. I had to visit a pharmacy to find something to relieve the itching from the bites. They gave me something unavailable in the US that really helped.

We also used the AC in Florence as our window was again not screened. They gave us the plug-in mosquito device but it simply wasn't working. It was fairly warm and humid enough so it seemed reasonable. There were plenty of mosquitos.

In Rome our window couldn't be opened so AC was used. It was actually very warm and brilliantly sunny that week and thankfully no mosquitos there. A pharmacist recommended the Avene sunscreen that's not sold in the US. I've found a few ways to continue buying it here. I was so glad I took it with me to Ostia Antica!

So, yes, we found plenty of mosquitos in the 3 northernmost locations. Others in our group were equally pestered, Definitely consider repellent and sunscreen - even during that time of year!

Mosquitoes don't follow the calendar. Whenever and wherever the conditions are favorable, they'll be there. It just takes a matter of days to hatch.

Exactly, Stan. I wouldn't necessarily expect to find mosquitos again in Italy in late September - early October. I'd just be aware that it has happened before and could do so again.

Likewise, in western Wayne county we had very bad mosquito problem that persisted for 6 months in 2021 yet haven't seen one mosquito in 2022. Of course our city made a big abatement effort last year that I'm sure contributed to this year's carefree outdoors. It's been a welcome relief.

We were in Venice in late May and there were mosquitos. Our room overlooked the Grand Canal and we kept our window open. It was too lovely to shut away. We only had them in our room but not when we were out eating in evening. I always take a few mosquito wipes.

I was in Venice this past May, and came home with several mosquito bites. Keep in mind that the canals are not very deep, and there is marshland near, and that makes it perfect for mosquitoes. It will depend on the weather, but I would just take some repellant and something to treat bites.

Mosquitoes in Venice-yes. We were there 28AUG-06SEP. Mosquitoes in Florence-YES! Especially bad at Boboli Garden. They love me, but also feasted a bit on my husband. Bring a spray/cloths/lotion you really trust to keep them at bay. I got two more bites just yesterday-Florence.
Both cities we’ve seen lots of people with red welts on their legs from bites. I didn’t have as much reaction to them in Venice as I’ve had here. Don’t take a chance!

So, I looked up what conditions are optimum for mosquitos to hatch: warm, damp weather (especially after a rain) and temps 80+. I’m not saying it’s a perfect science, but that might give you an idea of what weather to watch for rather than a blanket time of the year. I second any recommendation to bring something with you. Outdoor stores frequently have repellent products that come in small sizes. Our hotel provided a plug in thing which didn’t do much (if anything).

Several years ago we had dinner by a canal in Burano - and without our asking, the waiter brought us mosquito repellant along with our drinks. And we were glad he did!
