Mosquitos in Montalcino

Thanks so much for everones great input. When there last Septembe our son ended up with an infection and taking antibiotics so we're trying to avoid a similar problem.

e're visiting Montalcino in mid-June with our twin 8 year old sons and want to be as prepared as possible with mosquito protection. We were there last September and they were nearly eaten alive. We're considering bringing screen material for their bedroom windows since it seems that isn't the standard there

Can anyone offer any additional insight or suggestions please?

I've read drugstores sell pellet systems that plug into electrical sockets for mosquitos. I'm not sure how effective they are.

There are a few (very few) places that have window screens. A really nice hotel in Pienza, but too expensive for me. We're leaving for Tuscany tomorrow and our airbnb supposedly has window screens. If they are inadequate, I'll be putting up screening myself. I wouldn't consider staying inland without screens or air conditioning that I can program myself.

I have been nibbled by the tiny critters at various places in Italy and France, and can say with authority that Italy (and more specifically, Venice) has the hardiest and most cunning mosquitoes in either of the two countries. With that said, nothing works like Deep Woods Off, which is laden with lots of Deet.

Your lodgings may provide a Vape device that fairly effectively repels mosquitos. If you don't see one, ask your host or at the hotel desk. Otherwise, you can buy a device and replacement repellant disks cheaply at a grocery store such as Conad. The repellant disks need to be replaced about every other day. You no longer need to go to a drug store to buy these.

As a health professional I am hesitant to recommend a Deet repellant product for children. I would be inclined to check with your healthcare provider to find the recommended product.

You might have A/C that only runs when you're in the room, but not all day. Keeping the blinds shut when you're out can often help keep the room from heating up.

Another thing to keep in mind, past contributors remarked that if you've been out during the day, housekeeping may open your window, hence "inviting" the mosquitos in. One of our worst experiences with Mosquitos was in Arles, France.

I am so glad you asked this question! We have traveled to Tuscany, Venice, Rome & Northern Italy in June 4 times & have never had a problem. We will be going in September this year & haven't even thought about mosquito protection. I will add it to my list now. My husband and I travel to the Caribbean Islands frequently & have to worry about Mosquitos due to him contracting Dengue Fever from a bite in Roatan. (During the few minutes without bug spray.) We really do not like using DEET, though. When we travel, we buy from Amazon Picardin in pump & towelettes. It is rated safe by the EPA. It worked very well in the caves & jungles of Belize on our last trip. Prior to leaving, we spray our clothes with Sawyer Permethrin, also from Amazon. So far, no bites.

My experience is that often keeping a fan running in the room where you are sleeping is an effective solution against mosquitoes. Apparently they get confused if air is moving, and also body smells that attract mosquitoes get dispersed.

Have a fan blowing air at your body, like lachera said. It works. Mosquitoes can’t land with high winds.

Italians use a lot the Vape tablets which emanate a smell that kills mosquitoes (Italians pronounce it VAH PAY).
