Mosquitoes in Venice in June?

I've heard about a mosquito problem in Venice--anyone? Advice?

We were in Venice towards the end of August last year and didn't have a problem at all with mosquitos (and for some reason, mosquitoes are very attracted to me). We did have a problem a few weeks later in the Cinque Terre but I didn't get even 1 bite in Venice. I'm not sure if it works or not but someone told me to put a 'Bounce' dryer sheet in my pocket and that it supposedly repels mosquitos. I didn't do this only because most of my pants didn't have pockets but it's cheap and easy enough to try!

Hi Debbie, I was there last June and I did not notice even one mosquito and I took no precautions to avoid them. I imagine if there is a problem it varies year by year based on weather conditions. I've been to Venice serveral times and only once did I have a minor problem with mosquitos because our air con did not work and we had to sleep with open windows to a under used back canal. Other than that one time no problems. If there are mosquitos they are outnumbered by the tourists during the day so your odds are pretty good. Even the piqeon populations have been controlled in Venice now.
Have a great trip!

It's likely to be hot and there's lots of water. So I'd suggest preparing for mosquitoes. I've certainly been bitten each year in September/October. The hotel desk can give you a little plug-in unit that vaporizes a repellant. I also travel with single sealed towelettes treated with repellant. I find them particularly useful when there are mosquitos in my room at night.

If you really need to avoid them, I suggest you get a hotel with air conditioning so you can keep the windows closed. However, I find that hotel maids tend open the windows anyway when they're cleaning the room.

Sheron, just to let you know, dryer sheets are for gnats.. which are not deterred by standard bug repellent.

We were there the first week of May a couple of years ago and didn't have much of an issue with them after the first night. Our hotel room was right on the canal so the first night we decided to open the windows......so yes, the mosquitos came in our room. After that we kept the windows closed and didn't have an issue in our room or elsewhere. As others have said though, it is a lagoon.

I would just make sure your hotel has AC. When I was there in late May a few years ago, I had no problems with mosquitoes. Then another year in November, it was very stuffy in apartment and we opened windows. Bad idea! Tons of huge mosquitoes made their way in and bit us. (We closed the windows after a little bit but the damage was done). Walking around outside I didn't notice any issue with them, but it was also cooler weather so I was wearing pants and typically a jacket.

I was there in April, slept with the windows open, and woke up with bites on my face and arms. It was not an issue during the day. So yes, Venice definitely has mosquitos. I can't comment if they are still an issue in June but I would think yes. But they were only a problem at night so just sleep with your windows closed or be prepared to wear bug repellent

My first visit to Venice was in mid-October and my hotel gave me a (unsolicited) plug-in mosquito repellent for the room when I checked in.
