We will be traveling to Florence, Salerno, and Rome in June (as well as Amsterdam.)
Are mosquitoes as big an issue there as they are in the Mid-Atlantic—out all day and night? Are there any differences depending on the city/region?

We’ve been in Florence and Rome in early May and yes, I remember mosquitos. I automatically put Off packets in my supplies now wherever we travel as there are no screens on windows in most of Europe.
The plain where Florence sits used to be a swamp, and so was the plain between the center of Rome and the coast. Be ready to donate some of your blood to the local insect community. Italian mosquitos are skilled phlebotomists.
