Are mosquitoes much of an issue at Lake Como in July/August? (we will be there for a week). Since there is an Italian word for mosquito (zanzara) I assume they must exist somewhere in Italy but was not sure how many we should expect once in Lake Como/Varenna? Just trying to figure out what items we should bring/purchase for the trip. Mille grazie!
In four trips to Lake Como I don't recall any mosquitos. We were there in early fall and spring. Why don't you send an email and ask your hotel for their opinion? We have always stayed in Bellagio but assume there wouldn't be any difference with Varenna.
Was there in late June and have no recollection of the critters. Certainly not in the towns. Took one hike up a wooded hillside and think it was bug free.
As Suki said, ask your landlord.
The Italian language also has a word for dinosaur, therefore you should also assume they must exist somewhere in Italy. I'd be more worried about a T-Rex ripping my body apart than donating a few drops of my blood to a mosquito. There are several insect repellent products you can find in Italian stores. I haven't seen any dinosaur repellents though.
Your hotel or B&B will probably have a plug-in insect repellent available. Or you can buy one at a grocery/alimentary.
One is enough for me. Hate those critters.
