Has anyone ever stayed at Mormoraia in Tuscany? Thoughts? Or even in the surrounding area? Wondering if it's a good central place to stay in Tuscany.
I've never stayed in Mormoraia but I did stay for a week in Castellina in Chianti which is across the valley in comparable position. It is well situated for northern Tuscany and visiting the hilltowns. It is close to the aggressively uninteresting Poggibonsi but Poggibonsi is the local hub for traffic in the area. There is a train station there and buses leave from there to head to San Gimignano and other hilltowns so it is well situated that way. Being close to Poggibonsi means you're in a pretty central place for travel around the area.
You're very close to modern Certaldo which would probably be your "town" and Certaldo Alto is the tiny attached hilltown that would be worth a visit.
Within an hour or so (Google numbers - add ~20% or so for more realistic estimations) are Volterra, Siena, SG, Rada, Greve and even Florence on the outside. The southern famous cities - Pienza, Montalcino, etc - are probably closer to 1.5+ hours away and are further than I would count as a day trip. But this is the reality of an area as large as Tuscany with small and windy roads and there is no place that is close to everything.
Make sure everyone who may drive has an IDP before you go, study up on ZTLs in an area before visiting, when there is a parking lot on the edge of an area just do yourself a favor and use it.
And my final advice is to let the slower pace of Tuscan life seep in and slow you down. I still wonder at the places I didn't go after being in Castellina for a week but after a while distances in Tuscany seem long. And that town will be beautiful, but it's beautiful here as well.
Have a great trip, rural Tuscany is as beautiful as advertised,
