More train questions

Our month long trip to Italy is just 2 short weeks away and I was going over the trenitalia website looking at the schedule for some of the towns where we will be traveling to when I noticed that we would be on a Regionale Veloce (Rome to Orvieto) train. What is the difference between it and a Regionale? I did see you can reserve a 1st class seat. Does this mean we need to buy a ticket ahead of time for a specific date and time?

Near the end of our stay we will be in Vernazza traveling to Varenna and after changing trains in Levanto we will be on an Intercity train to Milano Centrale where booking a reserved seat seems to be a requirement. Can/should I buy tickets now for just that segment of the trip and then buy the tickets for the other segments (Regionale) at our convenience?

Hi Jim. For Regional or Regional Veloce, do not buy tix online; wait and buy at your convenience in Italy; they have no reserved seats, no discounts, impossible to sell out. (First class tix on Regional Veloce is not a reserved seat, just allows you to be in first class car). For Levanto to Milano Centrale, see how big the discount is to buy in advance. Trade off is that tix is for that train only, so if you miss train or change plans, your tix are likely worthless. Up to you how firm your plans are and whether the discount is worth it. If you wait and buy at last minute, you will pay base fare. Enjoy your trip!

Jim,

A Regionale Veloce train is an "express" Regional train that doesn't make as many stops. There are no price discounts for buying tickets in advance, so I'd suggest buying a ticket at Roma Termini using a Kiosk or at the ticket office, preferably the day prior to travel. One important point to note is that you MUST validate your ticket prior to boarding the train on the day of travel, or risk hefty fines which will be collected on the spot - DON'T forget! As the previous reply noted, there are usually no reserved seats on Regionale trains (at least not that I've ever seen).

For the trip from Vernazza (Levanto) to Varenna, a seat reservation on the Intercity trains IS compulsory. You may be able to save money on the Intercity portion of the trip with advance purchase, but at this late date the discounted tickets may already be sold out. You'll have to check and see if there are any Super Economy or Economy tickets left for the date and time you'll be travelling. You MUST be willing to commit to a specific train, date and departure time as the tickets are specific for one train only, and the discounted tickets are often non-refundable and non-changeable after purchase. To buy tickets for the Intercity, you might try www.captaintrain.com which is a very user friendly website.

When you arrive at Milano Centrale, you'll have to transfer to the Regionale for the final segment to Varenna. You should be able to buy tickets for that at the station in Vernazza but again, DON'T forget to validate prior to boarding the train on the day of travel. When you look at the electronic schedule board at Milano Centrale, you may not see "Varenna" listed as the destination as the end point of that train may be Tirano or elsewhere. Check the number of the train listed on your ticket.

Thanks guys, that helps. Ken thanks for the tip about Varenna possibly not showing up on the reader board. Sounds like that might be wise to do each time we head to a new destination.

And one more question. What is the difference between 1st and 2nd class on an Intercity train.

According to the Travel Tips section on this website, the difference between first and second class on trains is pretty minimal, whereas the price difference is large.

Hi Jim. 2nd class is 2 seats on each side of aisle. Most people think this is fine. 1st class is slightly wider seats; usually 1 on one side of aisle, two on other. Also 1st class most seats will be empty, so quieter and easier to spread out if desired. See pic of 2nd class on this site in travel tips / transportation / trains / first vs. 2nd class. Enjoy your trip!

I view a 2nd class seat as closer in space to a business class seat on an airplane. More than adequate space. While 1st class seats are wider, there really is not much more, if any more, space between seats. We rarely ride first class unless we get a special deal or 2nd is sold out - that has happened twice. Both times Christmas week.
