Hi, Giangilberto from Milan, I highly recommend visiting Mantova, it is an extraordinary Renaissance city of art.
Once the capital of the powerful Gonzaga dynasty, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it's fantastic gem of Lombardy, it combines a unique cityscape, surrounded by water, as the Mincio River is diverted just before reaching the city to form three artificial lakes (Upper, Lower, and Middle), with an immense cultural, architectural, and culinary heritage.
You simply must visit the Palazzo Ducale, where you can see the incredible Camera degli Sposi (Wedding Chamber) painted by Andrea Mantegna, as well as Palazzo Te, a villa just outside the city center that is famous for its frescoes.
I am not sure when you plan to visit, but if the weather is mild and you have some spare time, a boat trip on the lakes is highly recommended. It allows you to view the city from a different perspective and enjoy the Mincio nature reserves, perhaps even traveling as far as Borghetto sul Mincio, with its enchanting watermills.

Mantova: The Gonzaga dynasty in Mantova was overwhelming! After checking into my B&B, I visited their Palazzo Ducale the first afternoon - ornate rooms that just go on & on! I finally had museum fatigue and headed to the cluster of piazzas for a gelato.

It’s good to have a “no agenda” day during a trip, so that’s what I did for my second day! Lots of misc. photos as I wandered & enjoyed the architecture, people and parks of Mantova. Mantova had several piazzas near each other with great restaurants.

At Mantova I stayed at a unique B&B. Palazzo Arrivabene B&B is an ancient palazzo with a gorgeous entry, sitting room and dining room. My room was easily the largest of my entire trip. The owners provided a beautifully decorated formal breakfast table with antique china, etc. The last morning I needed to head to the train station earlier than breakfast time, and they insisted that they get up early and have breakfast ready for me. I was expecting a coffee & pastry. Instead, it was another breakfast equally as nice as the first one with fresh bakery items he brought in as I sat down.

We are headed to Mantova in October, spending 4 nights there.

One thing we might do on one day if the weather is good is go for a bike ride. Apparently there are. some great bike routes nearby.

Yes, there were some serious bicyclists’ groups stopping in Mantova while I was there.

I did a day trip there from Verona on a Monday 10 years ago. Many places were closed. You might keep what day of the week you decide to go in mind.
