Hey all was hoping I can get some input on pros and cons of staying in either the Monti area (around or west of Cavour train station) vs Largo Argentina area. When looking on the map, they are about a 20 minute walk from one another, one being closer to some things I’m doing and the other being closer to other things I’m doing. So I’m not sure how to decide which place to stay. Overall, prioritizing seeing ancient historical sites when in Rome, want our hotel location to be convenient to the things we’re doing, have good restaurant options around, be safe (obviously), and have a bit of a “charm” to it when walking around, particularly at night. I already have 2 hotels in each location picked out, so not looking for specific hotel recommendations, more so looking to narrow down my choices!
Monti has charm and plenty of restaurants; I stayed in Monti for 20 nights on a recent trip to Rome. But Largo Argentina has a cat sanctuary, so from my perspective they both have pluses.
The Metro in Rome is less helpful for most visitors than the subways in other large European cities, For places beyond walking distance, buses are often more useful. Be sure you're not over-valuing proximity to the Cavour Metro station.
If this is your first visit to Rome, I suggest you stay in the Largo Argentina area. We are visiting Rome again this year for our second visit and staying just across the street from the cat sanctuary. Last year we stayed in the same neighborhhod, a little closer to The Pantheon. Monti is a lovely neighborhood and charming. We personally like the energy in the central area. Either location will be enjoyable.
Largo Argentina is my choice. I’m staying almost next door to the cat sanctuary in September. Last trip in 2019 we stayed near Piazza Navona but visited Largo Argentina area several times. It’s close to major and minor sights and walking distance to most.
Thank you so much everyone for your replies and insight! Gotta say I’m surprised to see so many leaning more toward Largo Argentina! It’s just not mentioned quite as often as Monti on other forums. But that’s precisely why I came here!
Good to know that buses/tram may be more useful. I figured metro would be useful since I’ll be arriving and departing from termini and doing a day trip to Ostia Antica, so figured proximity to metro would be good. I’ll loom more into transportation options around the city
For everyone who mentioned the cat sanctuary, that is definitely a plus for us! We’ll be missing our kitty while we’re away on this trip!
