Can you please advise some helpful advice on taking the train from Monterosso to venice? Which is the quickest route and train line? Thank you
I'm assuming you meant Monterosso.
Go to www.trenitalia.com, the website of Italy's National train operator. Select English then enter
from: MONTEROSSO
to: VENEZIA SANTA LUCIA
date: choose a date in the next seven days
hour: 00 (this will show all options for that date starting from 00:00 hours)
You will have various options displayed throughout the day. The trip involves several train changes with multiple routes possible depending on the time of travel.
Via Pisa - Florence is probably the fastest, but with more train changes.
Via Genoa-Milan the route with fewest changes (sometimes only one train change in Milan), but not as fast.
In general, there are 3 ways to go. Monterosso --> Venice via Genoa and Milan, via La Spezia Centrale, Parma and Bologna and via La Spezia, Pisa and Florence. Fastest time is 5hrs via Florence. Longest routes take 6.0+ hours. 1-2 train changes on all runs. Here's a screenshot of a typical schedule a few months out. http://gyazo.com/a9317c3d3fbcfd47f08657ea4e49dd51 Note the fares on the right. These are beginning fares. The fares you see here are non-refundable that you can get by booking early. Base fares are higher.
Yes....I meant Monterosso al Mare.....thank you for the information.
Trenitalia is the national railway's own web site, and also sells tickets, although you need not book ahead (and we would not book online for any unreserved regional train). Another source to view and print schedules for most of Europe (but not buy tickets outside Germany) is the DB link at How to Look Up Train Schedules Online.
ted,
If you're not comfortable with multiple changes and trains, one of the easiest routes is a departure from Monterosso at 10:58, arriving Venezia S.L. at 16:40 (time 5H:42M, one change at Milano Centrale). The layover in Milan is only 15 minutes and the second leg is via high speed FrecciaBianca, so it will be a relatively easy trip.
