Monterosso to Siena

We will be in Italy this September. Does anyone have advice about the best way to get from Monterosso to Siena? I’ve looked on the Trenitalia website and it says there are “no solutions found” by train. Also, is there a car rental agency in Siena? We are thinking of renting a car to tour around Tuscany to see the other hill towns.
Thanks

Terri,

The reason you likely got the answer "No solutions found" is that the schedules for September may not be uploaded yet. The trip is very easy, although will involve several changes.

I'd suggest checking a date prior to 9 June on the same day-of-the-week that you'll be travelling. There are numerous solutions, most with 2 or 3 changes, and travel times of about 3.5 hours. As many of the trains you'll be using are Regionale, if you buy tickets locally you must validate prior to boarding the train on the day of travel, or risk hefty fines which will be collected on the spot.

Regarding car rental, note that each driver listed on the rental form must have the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. These are valid for one year, and easily obtained at any CAA/AAA office (two Passport-sized photos required, which may be provided by the issuing office). Failure to produce an IDP if requested can result in fines on the spot!

You may also want to have a look at some of the other posts here concerning the dreaded Zona Traffico Limitato (limited traffic) areas that are becoming increasingly prevalent in many Italian towns & cities especially Florence, which is almost saturated with automated ZTL cameras. EACH PASS through one of the automated Cameras will result in a €100+ ticket, which you won't know about until several months after you return home! We did this a few years ago. You can:

  1. Take the train from Monterosso to La Spezia, train into Florence, and then bus into Siena. The bus drops you in the town center whereas the train is a bit further of a walk.

  2. Take the train from Monterosso to La Spezia and walk over to the Budget rental car to get your car. We did this because we wanted to stop for lunch in Lucca and drive to our agriturismo outside of Greve.

Another train option is to change in Empoli for Siena. Imo it's faster and easier than going all the way to Florence and then taking the bus to Siena.
