Monterosso/Sorrento

My wife and I are hoping to visit the Monterosso and Sorrento areas for ten days in September 2014

We will start our journey from Florence and end it off in Rome where we will start a 12 day cruise

Could anyone help us with an Itinery for these 10 days and also possible include how we would get to and from Florence and Rome

thanks

Note first that Monterosso and Sorrento are about 400 miles apart and only the slower Regionale trains that make every stop on the run go to these two places from Florence and Naples. Second, from Sorrento, you are about 4.0hrs away from the Civitavecchia train station which is where you will need to be to get to the cruise boat docks. You will be on three different trains to make this 4.0hr trip (Sorrento/Naples, Naples/Rome, Rome/Civitavecchia).

For Florence to Rome, there are about 55 high-speed trains each way every day that run between these two cities. Travel time is 1hr35min. There are also numerous high-speed trains to/from Rome and Naples. Monterosso is about 3.5hrs from Florence by train and Sorrento is about 3.0hrs from Rome by train.

How many nights on the ground? Some people say 10 days but then include arrival and departure day etc.
You are including too much for your available time. You must also consider that Monterosso and Sorrento require several train changes to get to. I would eliminate the Cinque Terre and spend the extra saved time in Sorrento and visit the Amalfi coast.
The transport mode will be trains.

Four cities/regions in ten days sounds like a lot, especially with the travel time between your furthest points taking about 7 hours. See train schedules online for connecting any of these towns (e.g., Monterosso - Napoli, most published through June 14) except not the local Circumvesuviana commuter train (or ferry) that you'll catch from Napoli to Sorrento.
