Looking for tips on taking ferry/boat, incl. best price, duration
from Monterosso to Portofino in late June,
and train from Portofino to Genoa.
We are a group of (4) with luggage and limited time in CT
We are looking at the possibility of doing the boat ride + train to Genoa in same day
vs. breaking up trip.
Thanks very much!
I'm not sure a boat trip from Monterosso to Portofino will be possible, as there doesn't appear to be many departures so timing could be an issue. Weather will also be an issue, as the boats don't run if the seas are rough.
Travel from Portofino to Genova is easy, although Portofino doesn't have rail service so you'll be departing from Santa Margherita Ligure. If you take the ferry from Portofino to SML, you'll have a walk to reach the station, which is on the hill above town (there are stairs leading up to the station). It's not difficult but with lugagge you might consider a Taxi. That trip ranges from about 30 minutes to 50 minutes with fares from €3.40-8.00 PP, depending on which train you connect with. You'll have to decide which of the stations in Genova you want to arrive at, as there are several. Most trains seem to stop at Genova Piazza Principe.
For the Ferry this is the official website of the company http://www.navigazionegolfodeipoeti.it/en/
Just keep in mind the boats don't run if the weather is bad or the water is rough where they are unable to dock. So the ferry may not be running on the day you want it.
On the website i was clicking for Boarding, Rates and Timetables. Then pick your departure port (Monterosso) and at the bottom was one for Monterosso - Portofino and this is what comes up. It's in Italian but no service yet. I'd check it again in a few weeks.

The same site has the Monterosso - Cinque Terre schedule for the times and fares between just the 5 villages which is here:

Forget the ferry for a transport link from Monterosso to Portofino. It's more an excursion and last year it didn't start until July 3. You don't make your final destination clear, but why not train from Monterosso to Rapallo, check you bags and take the ferry round trip to Portofino, then continue to Genoa. The transfer at Rapallo is level and not a great distance.
Thank you to all
Info very much appreciated!
