Monterosso lodging & restaurant suggestions

Looking at last minute lodging in Monterosso and several good options - would you suggest old town near the train with older in need of updating room overlooking the water/beach or upscale B&B in the new town? Just staying one night - will arrive mid morning, drop luggage, go explore (no hiking) and wanting to find a great place with a view for dinner and wine.

JR,

When is this trip taking place? It could be tough to find accommodation in Monterosso on short notice.

The train station is in the new town (Fegina) but there are excellent accommodations in the old town (Centro Storico). It's an easy walk between the two sides of town, but if you have lots of luggage and are staying in the old town, a Taxi works well. I'm unclear on what you mean by "older in need of updating room"?

One of the best hotels in the new town with rooms overlooking the water is La Spiaggia. It's only a short walk from the train station.

My favourite hotel is in the old town, Hotel Villa Steno. It's uphill from the main piazza, so a Taxi from the station would be a good idea. They have a sister property, Hotel Pasquale which is easily walkable from the station. If you'd like something a bit more upscale, you could have a look at Hotel Porto Roca, which is at the far end of the old town (again, take a Taxi). As someone else mentioned, outstanding views from the hotel and restaurant.

If you stay at Porto Roca, you'll probably want to dine there as you'll only be in town for one night. If you stay at one of the other hotels, you might try Cantina di Miky which is on the main street, not far from the station. It's a big favourite with many here. They have a small patio overlooking the ocean, and they do serve wine (along with a good selection of craft beers). Another restaurant you could try is Ristorante Belvedere in the old town, right on the harbour. It can get busy in the evening, so it's prudent to go early.

When you arrive there, you may wish you had booked more time. I find it's a great place to enjoy Il dolce far niente.

Buon Viaggio!

Awesome info - and thanks for all the great details. This helps a lot in our planning. Going to opt for the short walk from train station as we will need to be close for early morning train out. Can't wait!

This is all very good information. We looked in to Hotel Pasquale and Hotel Villa Steno, and are fully booked for our trip at the end of August. The Porto Roca wanted 2-3 nights stay, and we too will only be able to spend one night. We booked a room at La Spiaggia. The online reviews are good, and some speak of tired decor in need of updating, and others mention some renovated rooms. Not sure we to expect but we were able to get a room with a small balcony overlooking the water, so we are happy. Do you know of this property?

We also read about Cantina di Mikey. Should we make a reservation far in advance or when we get there?
We will get to Monterosso mid morning and drop our bags off and hit the streets. Any suggestions anyone has as must do's would be kindly taken as we only have such a short time. We were thinking of trying to take the ferry to one of the other towns simply for the view. We really don't know what to expect.

We absolutely loved La Osteria - no real water views but fabulous food. Cantina Da Mikey has great water views too - also la Tortuga - make sure to make reservations as we were there in May and still needed them. call or email a week ahead -that is what i did and glad i did ( just returned from 4 days in CT based in Monterosso).. You will love it and want to stay!!!! One must do: a late afternoon lemon spritz at Enoteca da Eliseo. Owner is so kind and that drink us just the best - great place for people watching after a day of touring or hiking. Enjoy!!!

Sorry to be coming in so late but missed this one as it was buried in JR's post.

Yes, we've stayed there and friends of ours have stayed there as well: thumbs up from all. Rooms are small and plainly furnished but it's very clean and the view from a sea-side balcony is great. Maria, who usually staffs the reception desk, is a gem and the owner's daughter. It's a short, easy walk from the train station, and the excellent Cantina di Miky is practically next door.
