Montepuulciano to Cinque Terre

We are staying in Montepulciano as a home base for 3 days the end of April.
We have rented a car and want to know if a day trip to Cinque Terre is manageable either by car or by train? If so what is best car or train?

That seems too far (definitely too far to go by train) and you may have problems parking if you don't get there early enough.

Looking at google it appears you would have at least 7 hours of roundtrip 'travel'. I have found google tends to be 'optimistic' with their travel times.

You will have to determine if that is 'manageable'. If you leave early enough and do not mind driving back in the dark, you could have enough time there to make it worthwhile. Not something I would do.

If you want a seaside experience, I would look at somewhere closer.

By car seems to be the only possible option. Trains look to be about 5.5 - 8 hrs one way.

Too far as a day trip. What I did one year is after a week in Tuscany (near Montepulciano ) we turned in the car in La Spezia (after a brief stop in Pisa to see the tower) and took the train into Manarola. (Cinque Terre).

Because of limited time we have changed plans. Will fly to florence and stay in either Lucca or Siena to be able to see Cinque Terre.
We can take train to La Spezia and on to CT.

For a day trip by train to Cinque Terre, stay in Lucca. That will save you up to 3 hours of round trip train travel compared to Siena.
