Wanted some advice on a day trip to Volterra. We will have a car and will be near Montepulciano for 4 nights. I have googled direction and says 1.5 hours. Any advice? Also any must see cities while staying near Montepulciano? I have done lots of reading but value the advice on this forum.

Would suggest day trips to the very close by towns of Montalcino and Pienza from Bella Montepulciano. Would also suggest a full day in Montepulciano with no side trips planned, it is worth an entire day Minimum. Finally, Volterra is wonderful as a day trip, but on the way (at least-on our route) don’t overlook Montareggioni, a wonderful walled town on the way, just a lovely stop. And.Volterra is wonderful, you will enjoy it I am sure.

There is a great coppersmith in Montepulciano who should not be missed. We purchase a 5' diameter copper plate that hangs over our fireplace. Truly one of our treasured pieces of art that we have collected over the years.

If Volterra, add San Gimignano. Agree with other recommendations as well. Pienza and San Q are nice, but LOVE Montalcino. It's a great area to stay at.
