Montepulciano Taxi Service or Public Transportation To Wineries

Hello,

My travel group and I will be staying in Montepulciano this summer for a few days. We would like to tour some of the wineries that are nearby. I was wondering if anyone had been there recently and can comment on the availability of taxi services or otherwise for transportation from the hilltop part of Montepulciano and these wineries. We were wondering if there is a taxi service readily available to take us from downtown to the wineries and back?

We are trying to decide if we really need a rental car to do some winery tours.

Thank you for any information

Hello - there are taxis in Montepulciano, but my experience is that you need to pre-reserve your tansports. This is a hilltop town and there are only a few taxis that are usually in demand. It's better to reserve them days in advance. Also - word of caution - there is a taxi driver named Giancarlo. Do not get in a vehicle with him. He drives dangerously and has had a number of accidents.

One other suggestion - if you want a spectacular wine tour, I suggest hiring Fabrizio with Ciao Fabry Tours (http://www.ciaofabrytours.com/). I recently spent a day with him and it was unforgettable! He took me to a few very special wineries that were family owned. I was able to meet the family and they told me all about their process which ended with an incredible tasting. Whenever I open one of the bottles I had shipped, I am immediately transported back to my day with Fabrizio.

Enjoy your trip! -Norman
