Montepulciano: self-guided vs private tour

We will be traveling north from Rome this June for a 4 day stay in Tuscany. Our home base will be in Chianti close to Monti. Our plan is leave Rome by rental car in the morning and stopping to tour and eat lunch in Montepulciano before heading to Chianti B&B. I have read Steve's information on parking and touring the city but there are also a number of great sounding tours to this area for wine tasting and such. Does anyone have experience in taking the city in on their own vs a tour. I think it would be fun just to hit it on the way but if there is a better way to take in this beautiful region I would like to know. Also, if you have had good experience with specific tour companies or individuals in Tuscany I would be interested.

tdalton14,

I was in Montepulciano in June 2010 for 4 nights. I love this town! It is a great place to stay, and I would imagine be a great day trip, too. The town itself is small, and I can't see needing a tour guide for the town. The self-guided walking tour in the Italy guidebook was enough for me.

However, we did take a small group tour of 2 local wineries. The trip was a few hours, and, in 2010, very reasonably priced. We signed up at the TI and went on the tour the next afternoon.

Thanks Sharon. That's my impression of the city. Small enough to take in over a few hours and I guess we could take a formal wine tour day trip to the area from Chianti if we want to go back for more. Tim
