Are most shops and restaurants open in Montepulciano and Volterra on Sundays. I'm trying to decide whether I should stop for a Sunday overnight in one of them on my way to the Cinque Terre.
Where are you coming from, and where are you visiting? Montepulciano is closer to the highway which makes a stop easier.
I was in both each on a sunday last month. Volterra for their 1398 festival and the following week in Montepulciano for their Bravio. The shops on the main streets were open. If that is their regular schedule I'm not sure, or if they were open with people in town for those festivals.
We will be coming from Orvieto Sunday morning.
Both are big weekend tourist destinations, so most shops and restaurants will be open in either city.
Depends how you come, Volterra is closer to Cinqueterra whereas Montepuliciano is way to the south. Some of the food stores and other places close at 1 on Sundays. We are here now outside Montepuliciano and all the tourist traps are open but the markets are not. It would be a very long drive or train ride from Montepuliciano to cinque terre though
