Montepulciano or Pienza for 3 nights

Trying to decide where to stay for an impromptu trip (we we supposed to go to the Dolomites, but the weather is too bad).

We love small towns, and even though they are calling for rain in Tuscany also, I figure it will still be beautiful. We're celebrating our 30th anniversary :)

We're coming from Venice in the morning. What would be best - to rent a car in Venice and drive, or take a train and then rent, closer to the towns. I looked at Siena and Arezzo for the train, but Arezonis much more expensive for the train.....

Also, which city to stay in?

Thanks?

I have done the drive from Venice and it is not particularly beautiful, but it was easy enough and does give you some freedom to stop when you want in case the weather clears. I would not rent in Siena as it is a confusing place to drive. It is actually easier to rent at the Florence airport and get right out of town into the villages. You are right near the freeway and can avoid the dreaded zones and fines! Even in the rain you can enjoy Tuscany... just pop into any vineyard on your route, or any little village café. Better to be in Italy in the rain than almost anywhere else!

Find somewhere in Siena. You can either bunker down, or pass the time in a cafe/bar.
San Gimingano is easy by bus, and Florence easy by train.

Can't advise about travel but we rented a place outside of Montepulciano for two weeks a few years ago and enjoyed the town and area very much. Pienza is a short drive away and we ate there a several times. You will enjoy either of those towns and the surrounding Tuscany hills. I liked the town of Montepulciano better as there was more of the old town to explore.
