Montepulciano or Pienza

Can anyone sway me:
Fact: I did already book in Montepulciano but logistics concerns have me rethinking it
Booking is cancellable with no penalty at this time. Also a booking appears to be available for a nice view room in Pienza

Traveling with wife and young daughter (3 years old)
3 night stay in Sept., likely arriving early afternoon and leaving around noon the last day. Will have a rental car.
Want to within the city walls so we get that history, ancient feel and architecture with walkable shops and restaurants. That is what will make us enjoy the town so have ruled out the farm or staying outside the walls. Have it narrowed down to these 2 t

Logistical problem: plan on doing some driving each day and on likely 2 days a 6 AM drive to see sunrise from a specific location.

So Pienza or Montepulciano.
IMO
Pienza: Hotel I don't like quite as much not as luxurious but has a cool history, both appear to have great views from the room and common areas, is flatter for walking around which on this vacation which will have plenty of hiking and stair climbing before and after Tuscany is a good thing especially with toddler in-tow. Seems inconvenient to not have car nearby and worry about potentially driving around for an hour looking for a spot. Hotel does offer paid valet parking so can book that and don't mind paying but not sure if I can get the car myself if needed since getting someone to get your car at 6 AM I could see posing a problem.
Drive from here is only 10 minutes for my sunrise.
Location in general a little better being in the middle of Montepulciano and Montalcino vs. on either end, closer to San Quirico.
There is a hotel pool which is a plus but not a requirement.
Shopping seems as good as Montepulciano since we really don't drink wine and we do like cheese?
Food options roughly equal in terms of numbers and variety within walking distances?
The town's alleys and piazza's don't seem to have as much character and history, but without ever being inside either town this is a guess and could be a very bad generalization?
Views are good from both towns?
Also the town is much smaller, so I fear we will cover the entire town too easily and then desire to be leaving the town more often than staying in town for our stay.
Other than not being able to park right at the hotel the in and out of town general driving seem much easier and faster.
Parking or access to my car at all hours is my biggest concern.

Montepulciano
Hotel sounds better and has amazing reviews.
Hotel has parking but is at top of hill which appears to be quite the drive to get in and out many times.
Town overall has more appeal to me but have fears about logistics on getting out easily and quickly often at odd hours have me worried.
Wife may tire of the constant up and down hill walking.
Town looks more ancient, historic? Which I like.
Drive from here is 30 minutes for my sunrise and these will be solo trips so quick trips alone while family waits.
a big difference, when the each way becomes a round trip it is much more time out of the room.
To be honest part of the scary curvy drive within the city up to the hotel has appeal to me but think that appeal will more likely turn to major frustration as I revisit it for the 5 time in 2 days or need to get out fast to catch changing light.

Seems to have more areas to explore so could stay for a few days and not cover every inch which I like
Nicer for walking around at night/more scenic?
Visiting Montepulciano for a half day and not staying it in seems like a better walking plan as you can take the lift to the top and then walk down, never having to walk up. Saving your legs for other days/sites.
I would be close enough that we could come back for an evening easily enough one night without having to spend the night in this town.

Lastly though well in advance and no penalty I really hate cancelling a booked room. I feel bad for the proprietor.

We spent 2 weeks in the historic center of Montepulciano and found it fairly convenient for traveling out by car to nearby towns, abbeys etc. I find it much more attractive than Pienza but for a such a short stay I am not sure it matters all that much.

Yes, thank you for 2 weeks I think Montepulciano would have more to do. This would only be 3 nights/ 3 full days though
1 day we are planning on driving to Siena for most of the day as well.

Attractiveness of the town does matter a good bit though, as I would love to go on this trip and rather say wow I would love to return to X town not we had a nice stay at X town but next time want to stay in Y town ; if you know what I mean.

Close yes and prefer hotel as well as town of Montepulciano but driving into and out of from hotel at top seems complex and time consuming

Since I need to be out very early and headed past pienza in the am hours it is not as good logistically a choice as pienza

Leaning switching to Pienza unless someone comments that driving into and out of montepulciano takes only a couple of minutes and is simple even in the dark ; guess that is really my main concern

I feel as you do about cancelling a reservation, but I have occasionally done it when plans change. I like Pienza and Montepulciano, but I was swayed by your arguments in favor of Pienza.

I hate to mention it, but have you looked at Montalcino?

Originally I did look at Montalcino
Really won't help me with logistics though, as would be similar problem as Montepulciano, just opposite direction.
From what I recall I preferred the hotel I had found in Montepulciano.

Area I want to drive to in the early morning is in between Pienza and San Quirico (closer to San Quirico but close to either town)

If I wanted to stay exactly there and not even need a car for these predawn morning hours I could, at an agristrimo right there but feel like my wife would much prefer to stay within the walls of an old city and have nearby shops and restaurants.

We stayed in Montepulciano last May for five nights with a car at the top of the town, (Meuble Il Riccio) and it was lovely. We had a balcony with views out over the countryside. That said, it was a bit of a challenge finding their parking lot the first time, but was fine after that. Leaving town, if we followed the signs for the town we were heading towards, we were ok. I believe there is a small playground at the fortress/museum at the very top of town in their gardens. Also, there is a large square at the top of town which allows room for running around. The streets are all up or down, but one need not go all the way down to find shops and restaurants. Also, there is a shuttle the runs from the top to the bottom of town and back. We weren't with a three year old, but it could be doable if one wanted. There is plenty of history in the town.

We spent a week in the region last fall, and visited both places. I think your general impressions of both towns are accurate. Both were packed with tourists during the day when we visited. If your hotel in Montepulciano is near an entrance to the city walls, it could be quite easy for you to get in and out. If not, it will probably be easy for you to get out at 6 AM, but harder later in the day if you have to follow hordes of tourists up the hill. Also, we found the parking in Pienza to be very tight, so you would have to take advantage of your hotel valet services. Pienza is a tiny place, so I bet your hotel would be happy to let you walk to retrieve your car early in the morning if valet services aren't available.
Have you considered staying in San Quirico d'Orcia? We spent an afternoon there, and thought it was very charming, if less historically significant than the other two. Its old center is closed to traffic, is fairly flat, and it has several nice restaurants, good shopping (it caters less to the tourist trade, so is more interesting, in my view), some lovely ancient churches and a big rambling park that your daughter would love.

We stayed in Montepulciano in 2013 and loved it. Going back in 2017. Did not find any problems going in and out of town when we took day trips. One day trip was to Pienza, then on to Montalcino. Trip to Pienza I believe was only about 45 minutes. very nice town, but I feel more to do and see in Montepulciano. We stayed in the historical center on top of the hill right at Piazza Grande. Hotel Duomo http://albergoduomomontepulciano.it/foto/?lang=en or Camera Bella Vista http://www.camerebellavista.it/inglese/index.php are both wonderful, and both have private parking available. Bell aVista had fantastic views. My recommendation is stay in Montepulciano and day trip to Pienza.

Hi Charlie,
Although I would prefer to stay in Montepulciano, as a part time professional photographer I will be kicking myself if I am not out in the wheat fields in the pre-dawn hours at least once if not all 3 mornings of our stay.
I won't have the green hillsides at this time of year so once the sun is over the horizon I am likely out of luck.
Where I need to be is past Pienza, in between Pienza and San Quirico
By your account the drive though not far would be too long to be taking at these hours and then having to go back the same way to join the family before the day even starts.
As a result I don't think Montepulciano works for us but for most travelers it would of course, my situation is unique and I should have planned a little better to start.
Being in Pienza I think will work better and decided I must go that route.

You really can't go wrong in either place. Have a wonderful trip. Ciao
