Montepulciano hotel advice

As part of a 17 day trip next September we are looking for a B and B or hotel in Montepulciano for 4 or 5 nights. We'll have a car, but like to be within walking distance to many restaurants in the evenings so an agriturismo out of town is not what we're looking for. Any recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks, RJean, but we want to be in town and enjoy the town in the evenings.

I'd suggest the agriturisimos outside of that town. It is a little out of the way town--south of Siena and off the main highways.
Believe me that if you have a car, you'll want to use it. Tuscany is quite hilly.

Hi Vicki,
We've been going to Montepulciano for years and love it there. For in-town accommodations, try Charming Homes Montepulciano. The owner has apartments for rent that are really nice. For a bed and breakfast experience, try Fonte Martino, which is at the base of town. We stayed there this past summer and loved it. We walked to town many times from there and it took about 30 minutes.

hey hey vicki
how fabulous to spend time there, don't know your budget in euros, how many people, make sure they have parking on property. here's a few places you can check with:
fontemartino.com (a new built guest house, began on house hunters international 3 years ago, by a couple from ohio. it's beautiful, saw beginning to end)
angolo alla fortezza - gigliola contucci
booking.com (enlarge map of town/village so see where place is, read carefully about parking, on property or "close" location, reservation needed or not, hills to climb)
since you'll be there in september, check out for fairs and wine festivals, tis the season. enjoy and have fun
aloha

We enjoyed our stay at the Mueble il Riccio, which is at the top of the town. The owners are lovely people, very nice rooms, fantastic breakfasts and they have free parking. Getting to the parking lot was a bit tricky for us and I'm certainly glad we had a compact car.

I'm pretty sure the hotel is covered in Rick's book.

You'll find it hard to get a parking spot inside the city walls. We stayed at the following place, a 10 to 15 minute walk to the town walls, which we made a few times, including evenings. Easy in and out with the car. The lady who runs it, Antonella, is very personable and speaks English: https://www.fontecastello.it/

I stayed at Albergo Duomo at the top of the steep hill next to Piazza Grande. It’s a decent hotel but not luxurious - perfectly fine for me.

Two things I should mention: if you end up parking at the base of the hill, be sure to save your feet by taking the small orange shuttle up the hill. It’s very inexpensive. Also, of all of the towns I have stayed in Italy during several trips, Montepulciano had the least number of people walking around at night. I really enjoyed the area during the day, but it was a bit dull at night - possibly because many people were at their nearby farm houses.

We stayed at Palazzo Carletti

Lovely old palazzo in town, close to everything with their own free parking just below the wall- easy access, just a few min walk up a path from there to hotel. Nice breakfast, beautiful appointed rooms.
I think it was about 160 euros/night in 2014.
We prefer to be IN town as well.

Oh Vicki, We have generally had great luck with hotels but we really hit the jackpot with Osteria del Borgo in Montepulciano. The people are lovely, the rooms, and there are only 3, are individual and comfortable. the views are spectacular. The restaurant is wonderful, all the food is made there and it is simple and simply delicious, plus you eat on a terrace with views that could make you weep. Within a 2 minute walk is a TI who can arrange very individual wine tours, within 10 miles there are probably 30 wineries so easy to ride a 6 passenger bus and try a couple a day. A 2 minute walk to the Duomo and the Museo Civico museum, with works of art from the Renaissance. . There is free parking. http://www.osteriadelborgo.it/en/# https://www.booking.com/hotel/it/osteria-del-borgo-b.html

Can highly recommend Palazzo Belarmine Apartments, located at the top of the hill. Apartments are spacious with full kitchens. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Rates are reasonable ($90-110 per night last time I checked) and they have free parking about 2 minutes away. Duomo is about a 3 minute walk from the apartments.

Oh Kate, I almost booked a room at the Osteria del Borgo in 2018, but I was traveling solo that year and the only room available had an external bathroom. I didn’t want to deal with that situation. The views from the photos looked outstanding.
