Montepulciano area vs. Orvieto

We will be driving from the Chianti area towards the a Rome airport and wanted to stop at either the Montepulciano/Montalcino area or Orvieto in mid Oct. Any thoughts or suggestion? We will leave our B&B near Pianella around 9am and have to drop our car off around 6pm at the airport.

Thanks,
Linda

One big question that needs to answered is whether you are flying out of the EU after you reach the airport. The international airport requires 2-3 hours if you are traveling back to the US; I am assuming that you have this time allottment figured into your itinerary.
Both Montepulciano and Orvieto are spectacular hill towns. As much as I love Montepulciano, I would probably recommend Orvieto, as it is closer to Rome and it has the spectacular sights of the cathedral and the Etrruscan caves. Also some nice ceramic shops to visit. I believe that you will be there in the midst of truffle season, so by all means stop for a lunch of pasta with fresh black truffles.

I'd say Orvieto which has a wonderful cathedral, Etruscan remains and a lot to see throughout the city including underground remains and a very pleasant vibe.
Also if you have a hire car you can't take advantage of the main attraction of Montepulciano/Montalcino which must be the wines of those two cities.

Thanks for you thoughts. I was leaning towards Orvieto. We will be staying at a hotel outside of the airport and flying to Paris the next day. Any nice lunch spots?
