Hi...planning a trip to Florence December 1st. I want to go to Montepulciano, but is a day trip long enough or should I plan on a couple of days. If staying, anyone have any good places to stay? Thanks!

Assuming you have a car it takes almost a couple of hours to get there, when everything is said and done. If you need to rent a car just for that, then add additional time for the rental car pick up/return and related paperwork. And in December it's dark by 5:00pm. You can do it, but it's basically a quick visit just to say "been there, done that".
Without a car will certainly take significantly longer. Actually without a car I wouldn't even consider going to Montepulciano at all.
