Montepulciano

We are planning to drive the RS “Heart of Tuscany “ with a stop on Montalcino. That will put us arriving around 5 to Montepulciano. Will there be anything open? Also we are planning dinner around 8:30. What do we do there if nothing is open around that time?

No problem. Stores will still be open and most restaurants won't open until 7 or 7:30 so having dinner at 8:30 shouldn't be a problem - unless you don't have a reservation.

Go in the stores and walk the town looking out over the countryside. You will enjoy it. If you get there early go to the San Biagio Church which is at the bottom of the hill.

Montepulciano is gorgeous and the views out over the Val d'Chiana on one side and Val d'Orcia on the other are stunning. Park at a lot at the bottom of the hill and walk up through this gorgeous town and perhaps get a glass of wine at a bar with a terrace and view out over the countryside. There are many nice restaurants. book a reservation ahead. We like La Grotta across from S Biaggio just outside the walls at the bottom of the town but there are many others. You could park at the top of the town and wander town if you prefer, see the views, have a glass of wine and then meander down to La Grotta late.

There are hotels within the walls with parking; otherwise there is parking outside the walls for tourist visitors.
