We are staying at LaFalconara Agriturismo for a week (7 nights) in Sept. We will have a rental car. Does anyone have any recommendations on places to visit? Any recommendations on organized winery tours? Suggestions??? Thanks.
Stan & Janet
We just returned two weeks ago from laFalconara where we stayed for five nights. Our highlights were Assisi, Ricks' ultimate hill town of Civita, Montalcino, and Montepulciano itself. Your host, Alex, was once a partner in a local winery and he offered to take us for a visit. Unfortunately we ran out of time. Alex also gave great restaurant recommendations and made reservations for us as well. Alex will also give you ideas on what to see. You will have a great time in a beautiful area.
Stan and Janet.....I would also recommend Cortona and Orvieto (near Civita), which we had visited on an earlier trip. Take or rent a GPS. It really makes travel a lot easier in Tuscany. And watch out for the "phantom Mercedes, and Audi, and BMW" when you are in the left lane on the freeway.
We stayed near Bucine for a couple of weeks last September (about 45 minutes from Montepulciano) and we headed down the road alot of days and just stopped at towns we came upon. Pienza is very close to Montepulciano as is Montalcino. Siena is an easy drive as is Cortona. As you are driving on the back roads you will see many hilltowns. Most all of them are woth seeing. Towns you never heard of can be more interesting than the famous ones. When you pass a winery, stop in. You will probably be able to take a tour.
Thank you Scott & Mike for your recommendations! We appreciate your recommendations. After Montepulciano, we're heading over to Sienna for 2 nights before going Cinque Terra for 4. We'll bring a GPS.
