Montelpulciano Parking

We will be staying in Montelpulciano for one night in a couple weeks. And we are well aware of ZTL's and am a bit paranoid. The hotel sent the following email regarding parking at the hotel: I was able to google street view the route and seems pretty simple.

Our hotel is situated in Piazza Savonarola n.18, in the heart of the
town in a pedestrian area a few mt. from Porta al Prato; guests can
get in town by car, you only need to drive along Viale di Sangallo and
pass through the big arch Porta al Prato, drive along Via di Gracciano
nel Corso for about 40 metres and take the first left into Piazza
Savonarola After your arrival we will send "car details" to the local
authority to authorize parking and driving.

So here are my questions:
1. Has anyone else parked within the walls with hotel reporting your car to authorities? Any issues?
2. If we drive to hotel, will hotel give us a document reflecting they informed authorities?
3. There seem to be lots of parking lots around the walls, but the closest one to hotel on Google street view seem to be all pay parking (lines are blue). Is pay parking 24/7?

4. Does anyone know which lots are free without time limits? Or if time limits, 24/7 or only during the day?

One more question. We have plans to visit some friends at an Agritourismo a few miles from the city. Are taxis readily available? (so my husband doesn't have to be the designated driver)

Thanks for the help!

Karen, I can only tell you what we've done in the past. We've driven up to the gate, easy turn around, one of us has stayed with luggage while the other parked, purchased our tickets, put them in the windscreen. Then walked to our lodging from the gate. We had no problem feeding the meter since we were out exploring the countryside.

If you do elect to park in town, I'd definitely get a copy, this ensures someone didn't get so busy that they forgot to enter you into the database.

Karen, we will be spending three nights in Montepulciano in early July. It's our first driving trip. Would appreciate if you share your parking experiences after your trip. Thanks.

Hi Karen,
I have travelled to Montepulciano a lot over the years and always choose to park just outside the historic center. It just makes it easier to come and go without worrying about running someone over! I don’t know about the hotel you are staying at, but I have heard stories of mistakes happening because the car wasn’t reported properly. Chances are, there will not be any documentation provided by the hotel that they informed the authorities.
As for paid parking, you pay usually from 8am until 8pm. When you purchase parking, once you insert enough money to take you past 8pm, it runs over to the next day.

There is some free parking near where you are staying and there is also free parking in a lot some distance away, but it’s a nice walk through town…after you go up a huge staircase! 😊 If you want to PM me with your email address, I can send you some links/images from google maps to show you where everything is.
For your taxi question, sorry, but I usually have a car and don’t have any information.
Hope this helps!

I've driven into and stayed in Montepulciano twice in the last few years. Both times I stayed at the Politian Apartments at the "top" of town, and their driving instructions had us coming up some fairly steep narrow streets at the "top" end of town, rather than up the long way from the bottom of town. Both times, we parked on the street in front of the apartments and our host gave us a placard to put in the windshield of our car which gave us permission to park there. I don't recall if they reported our car to authorities.

TJ, in which lots do you usually park? I see lot #8, just outside the South end of center, is free, but wondering if it's easy enough to get to center with luggage. Otherwise we're looking at lots 1 - 5 near bus station where there is an elevator, according to RS guidebook. Thanks.
