I'm wondering how to pack/ plan for a trip to Tuscany in January/ February. I think I read that it would be around 40 degrees (f) but am wondering if it's a damp 40 degrees and therefore will feel colder. What about ice or snow? Anything else I should be aware of?
Montecatini or Tuscany?
Montecatini is in Tuscany, however the former is a town sitting in a valley, called Val Di Nievole, at low altitude (although Montecatini Alto is on top of a small hill) while the latter is a region approximately the size of Massachusetts and Rhode Island combined which has many microclimates with varying temperatures depending on proximity to the sea and altitude. So while in Montecatini snow is a rare event, however just 20 miles away there are rather high mountains, called the Pistoiese mountains, which include the Abetone area ski resorts. In Montecatini itself temperatures that time of the year average in the 30s F at night and around high 40s/low 50s during the day. Snow is rare as Montecatini is low in altitude. As you go higher in altitude, including the nearby mountains, temperatures drop, and the probability of snow and ice increases. If it's damp or not depends on the particular conditions at the time you go. Sometimes it's bitter cold and dry. Other times it's damp and foggy in that valley.
