We are staying in Siena and read about the Abbey south of Siena and thought we would take a ride there. It mentioned a restaurant on the grounds of the Abbey and wondered if anyone has been to the Abbey is it worth seeing and has anyone eaten at the restaurant?
The abbey is in a lovely setting and we enoyed going there very much. HOWEVER, we missed seeing the inside by about 5 minutes as it closed at Noon for a 3 hour break! The grounds are large and it is about a 10-15 minute walk from the parking lot to the abbey. Did not eat in the restaurant, but it looked quite small. We found a great lunch in nearby Buonconvento. Also take a look at Asciano, a small town close by. There's another abbey worth mentioning near Montalcino, Abbazia Sant'Antimo. Older, smaller, but still with the closing at midday.
Diane,
Yes, the Abbey is definitely worth seeing. The frescoes on the walls all around the courtyard are incredible and the grounds beautiful. We arrived when it opened and stayed a couple of hours. We did not eat in the restaurant, but walked by and it looked interesting. Teri
I really enjoyed the Abbey. We didn't eat there. For that matter, I don't believe the restaurant was even open when we were there.
Diane, I liked the abbey, you can see more here http://www.monte-oliveto.com/
The restaurant was fine.
