Monte Cassino by public transit?

What is the best way to visit Monte Cassino from Rome by public transportation? It looks like it would be manageable as a day trip from Rome. Am I correct in that?

I'm also wondering if anyone has stayed there on retreat. It's unclear to me whether they currently accept retreatants, and I welcome any information. And since it's a community of men, do you know if they accept women on retreat?

Thanks!

Hi, Sherry. I did this trip as an overnight. There are trains from Roma Termini to Cassino (about 2 hours travel time) and then you need a bus or taxi to the Abbey. I believe the Abbey closes at 1pm or 1:30, so I decided to overnight and have more time at the Abbey.

I don't know about the Abbey accepting retreatants, but there are probably women's congregations with retreat houses in the area. You can probably contact the Abbey directly; I didn't see anything about retreats on their website.
