Has anyone tried getting to Montalcino with Public Transit? If so, was it practical?
Coming from where?
Florence, probably should have mentioned that. Thank you.
I’ve never tried, because it is not very practical.
First you need a bus from Florence to Siena (AT-Autolinee Toscane bus #131R). That takes about 75 minutes.
Once in Siena you need to take a bus from the same company AT bus #114 to Montalcino via Buonconvento. That is another 65 to 80 min ride. You need to go in the morning as the last bus from Siena to Montalcino is around 1:30pm. Coming back it’s another similar trek. You could also take the train from Siena to Buonconvento then catch the 114 in Buonconvento, but you won’t save any time.
I’m assuming you don’t plan to go back and forth on the same day, because that would be challenging and would entail a very early departure and a very short visit to ensure your return on the same day (last bus back is currently at 6:20pm).
A more civilized way to visit it on a day would be with a private driver, even part of a small group tour, from either Florence or from Siena.
