I'm staying in Pienza and I was wondering if there is anywhere in Pienza, Montalcino, or Montepulciano to get food for picnics and stocking the hotel pantry. RS usually mentions places like this in his books but I was unable to find any mention of them for any of these towns.
I'm leaving in two weeks and am always looking to picnic a la Rick Steves. Here's a Helpline posting with some information: Picnic Supplies in Montepulciano: TA Forum 7/8/11 There is also a wonderful salami place right inside the lower main gates. A salumeria...they will whip up massive panini with pecorino cheese. I got one as big as my head...it lasted for lunch and dinner. Several shops in the historic center are available for fresh fruits, but I would suggest to consider Conar (If you're standing outside the church of Sant Agnese with the church behind you, look to your left and you'll see a branch of Conad a little way down the street on the right) or Eurospin supermarket ( not to far from the Church of San Biagio).
I'm leaving in two weeks as well! ...might see you there! Thanks for the tip!
There is a large COOP store in Montalpulciano-nice selection of fruits and veggies as well as other items to stock the pantry. It has plenty of parking available too. Piensa remains our favorite town in Tuscany.
Thank you so much for reply Susan!
Pienza is loaded with places to stock up on picnic supplies. Pretty much lines the main drag. Montepulciano has the Conad just outside the walls for better pricing, but there are also tons inside the walls. Montalcino is kind of pricey (not just the wine) so I'd load up on your picnic supplies before you head into that town.
