Montalcino or Montepulciano (Hillside Recommendation)

Trying to decide which one of these locations I should stay for a night. I am spending three nights in Tuscany the first night I thought I would stay outside of Siena, the second night I am looking for an accommodation in either one of these towns or another close by if anyone has any suggestions, and the third night I am planning on staying in Orvieto on my way to Rome. I seem to be find mixed reviews on where to stay. Does anyone have any good experiences they want to share?

I stayed in Montepulciano for 2 nights last year and thought it was a great town.

We stayed in Montalcino for 5 nights at the Hotel Vecchia Oliviera at the entrance of Montalcino. Wonderful hotel! Montalcino is little and walkable with great restaurant choices in the heart of rolling hills and vineyards of the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine. Our hotel gave us a wine map and good choices of wineries to visit. Montepulciano is a larger town in a beautiful setting. I think with one night, a smaller town experience is the way to go.

I've not been to Montepulciano, but spent 4 glorious days in Montalcino in the fall two years ago. We stayed two nights in Il Giglio, and two more in a room we rented from the Il Moro restaurant. Both were great, but Il Moro was better. The food, the wine- Montalcino was delightful-
For some background on Montalcino, read "Vanilla Beans and Brodo" by Isabella Dusi-
Orvieto is also wonderful, by the way, but I'm a red wine lover.

I'm doing the same thing as you in May. I have used the venere and trip advisor websites to book my accommodation. I always use them and find them really good. The're like getting thousands of recommendations from friends.
