Montalcino or Montepulciano

I'm too stupid to understand the question. If you're going to work in one of these on a day trip WITH Siena, you're going to spend most of your time in Siena and probably not leave until after lunch...so go to Montalcino which is closer. If it's a day trip FROM Siena, you'll have enough time for both. If you get bored with Siena and leave early, go to Montepulciano which is the better of the two spots you listed.

Ed~You are not stupid, I didn't write my question very clearly. Yes, we are staying in San Gimignano and going to Siena in the morning. Wanted to go on to either Montalcino or Montepulciano (we figured both would be too much!) so you answered my question. Thanks!

If I had to choose between the two, I'd choose Montepulciano.

I loved both towns but Montepulciano was my favorite.We stayed in a beautiful Farmhouse at its base. Pat
