Monopoli to FCO via Train

Hi All,

We are spending a few days in Monopoli, and plan to head home from FCO.

Our plan is to train (another early one!) from Monopoli to Bari, and pick up faster train there for Roma.

My question - I can make reservations on TrenItalia all the way to FCO, but the Termini to FCO is on Regionale Veloce ... is this better than just popping on the next available Leonardo at Termini to FCO?

Go to www.trenitalia.com/en.html , put Monopoli and Fiumicino Aeroporto in the from/to fields , pick a day of travel before December 11 click search. Pay attention to the number of changes.

Apart from a couple of Freccias each day, there are two local trains that go from Rome to Fiumicino:

  • the slow-and-cheap FL1 that bypasses Termini and calls at Trastevere, Tiburtina etc.
  • the Leonardo Express that departs from Roma Termini and makes no intermediate stops.

I don't remember which one is a Regionale Veloce, but It doesn't matter. In any case you can freely take the booked Rome-FCO train and, if you miss it, the following 2 or 3 trains.

It's best to just take the next Leonardo. The RV trains often run late and while you need tickets for the Leonardo, you don't have to get them in advance.

Just be advised that the train from Monopoli to Rome could run late. Built in a lot of extra time into your itinerary if you are connecting to a flight out of FCO.

Sara the Leonardo Express is an RV train with a marketing name. There are no other RVs between Roma Termini and FCO airport.
There are only 2 direct Freccia Trains a day from Monopoli to Bari (departing at 7:02 and 18:11) and none is known for being routinely late.
