Money Question for Canadians

I've been looking for information on how best to deal with funds in Italy... I've seen many American banks listed, but I'm curious as to what Canadians are using when traveling to Italy.
I'm going to call my bank to look at the options, but I just wondered if there was any product recommendations? I'd like something that does not charge large ATM fees, as we want to withdraw from ATM's throughout our travels.

Laura, I'm not totally familiar with all the financial institutions in Fredericton, but imagine you have all the major Banks. I primarily use Credit Union products during my travels, but have some Bank cards as well (mostly with TD / CT). I've never really paid much attention to how much the Credit Union charges for ATM fees, but believe these are reasonable and competitive. As I recall, my Credit Union charges a "flat fee" of $2 for each ATM withdrawal, plus of course the currency exchange. I'd have to dig through the statements to get a more precise figure. My Credit Union is affiliated with Cirrus / Maestro / Exchange and I've never had problems getting money from ATM's (for the most part). I'd suggest checking with Banks in your area to find out which one has the best rates. Note that your travel funds must usually be in a chequing account with a four-number PIN. Cheers!

Hi Laura, I'm with RBC and just use my regular bank card attached to my chequing account. Its always worked, but I do try to get a larger amount out each time because if I remember correctly they charge $5 per transaction. Most people tell you not to buy too much in advance but I've always gotten terrific rates at the Currency Converter booth in the mall. You can get their frequent customer card that waives the service fee (although I'm sure some is built into the exchange, but I'll take what I can get). (Yes we keep any such cash in a money belt under our clothes).

I have read that with TD's chequing account all ATM fees are included in the monthly charge. Our account is with TD so I plan to upgrade while we are away ($12 more than we pay now) and it should easily pay for itself.
From their website: No TD or network fee for non-TD ATM use anywhere in world (Interac network in Canada; Plus network outside of Canada)
