A friend told me you could exchange your dollar for euros at the Vatican at no charge. If so where?
There are lots of places that will exchange currency at no charge. They often will advertise "No Charge." However, they bury their fee in the exchange rate. Instead of selling the Euro for $1.29, they charge you $1.39 or $1.45, etc. In other words, they can set any exchange rate they want. No such thing as free money.
Don't take dollars with you. Use the ATM in Italy to get euros. The exchange rate is much better than when you change money. There are no "free" exchanges, just hidden fees. Donna
Thanks so much for your responses. I will use atm card. Kindly, Jackie
If you've got at least a month, consider setting up a Capital One Money Market account that charges no international fees and no withdrawal fees. They even pay you interest. Without a doubt, you won't be able to find a better deal.
Jackie, we were at the Vatican on August 4th. Even with a tour it's a mob scene. I don't recall seeing any currency exchange near the Vatican or inside. Do you know that you can use your ATM card in Rome? And you can pre-pay for Vatican tix online ahead of time and pay with a credit card. Saves $ and time! With the ATM call your bank and tell them you will be in Rome so they know about it ahead of time. We used it everywhere. Now, there is a foreign exchange fee and a non-atm fee. But I think we had a higher rate of exchange (i.e. we got more euros for dollars) than we saw anywhere at a currency exchange. Also - there are more ATMs then currency exchanges and ATMs are open 24-7 as opposed to a CX which has set hours. Just my two cents.
Use an ATM instead.
