Monastery stays in Venice

Anyone done a Monastery stay in Venice? We have done a convent stay in Edinburgh which was great so would appreciate any input on Venice. We have been a couple of times and stayed in an apartment and a pensione and since myself and 2 travelling companions like separate rooms we thought this might be a good and economical choice?

Have you looked at monasterystays.com? It has been recommended by several folks on this forum in the past.

Istituto San Guiseppe was a great place to stay for us last year. Located on a small canal midway between Rialto and San Marco. No breakfast but there is a grocery a block away. We booked via www.monasterystays.com but I’m sure you can book direct if you feel comfortable doing that.

The nuns are very nice and run a kindergarten/pre-school on the building. English speaking staff at the reception

I used monasterystays.com for my 1-week solo trip in Venice last October. I stayed at Madonna Dell Orto rooms in Cannareggio. It was cheap (70 EUR per night). The place has an elevator. I was given a triple room with a private bathroom. No windows but I had a big skylight. AC and heat with a remote control to adjust it. The room was newly renovated. The bathroom was big. There was (liquid) soap and hair dryer but no other amenities in the room. Breakfast was provided -- simple pastries and bread, cereal, coffee, tea and yogurt. They stocked up the fridge with bottled water (still and sparkling) for everyone to use free of charge. They ask that you not bring food into the room and eat it in the kitchen/dining area only. Free wifi worked great in the room and the common areas. I will definitely stay there again.

Stephen and Mary, did either place have a curfew? Some convents/monasteries do.

I think a curfew is one of the filters for MonasteryStays dot com.
Personally, I would look at the comfort and extra personal space of an apartment, but that's just me. I like a reading chair in my room, which doesn't mean the upright chair provided with the desk.

Stan -- no, the place where I stayed had no curfew. I was given two sets of keys -- one for the front door and one for my room.

Thanks Mary and Stephan, both of those were my top pics on MonasteryStays. I’m not worried about a curfew as we aren’t night owls and quiet is good after a long day “touristing”.

I have stayed at Instituto Canossiano San Trovaso in Venice. Like other convent stays, the room was spartan. If you know this before arriving you can bring your favorite travel-size toiletries with you. No breakfast was included but there was a kitchen for visitor use. It came in handy to store things I bought at the grocery store for breakfast. There was a lovely courtyard for a gathering space and a large lobby. I think there was also a t.v. room. The Instituto is in the Dorsoduro section of Venice. I recall booking directly with them.
