Has anyone used monasterystays.com website to book monastery rooms in Rome? There are 4 we're interested in: LAR126, LAR205, LAR128 and LAR133 -- not sure about those names either. Any help (or any experiences with staying at monasteries) would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Suggest you also look at www.santasuasanna.org--it's the US Catholic parish in Rome for suggestions also.
I use them all the time and they have links to their recomendations and I have never been disappointed. I usually stay at Santa Maria alla Fornaci(?) which is about 5 minutes from the Vatican.
Hi Marianne - I booked through this website for a stay at LAR128 earlier this year. All went smoothly the online booking is safe and efficient and they were great on customer service with email questions I had and then adding a night. LAR128 is a lovely, clean convent guest house a 'stones throw' from Piazza Navona. Monastery Stays is a booking service specialising only in this type of accommodation, their booking fee which is included in the prices, it's still a lot less (30%+) than a hotel stay we had in a similar size/location later on in our trip back in Rome. We stayed in Florence through them as well, again great. Don't worry about the venue codes, every house is generally known by the Order that runs the place, so they use the code to distinguish what might be confusing or duplicate names across some cities and make it easy to communicate with you and get everything booked. All the venue detail is in the booking package you get when they confirm it. Enjoy Italy, great country, can't wait to go again.
It's my understanding that the catch with many of these monasteries and convents is that they have a strict curfew, often as early as 10 pm, after which they lock the doors and you simply cannot get in. That can be a problem in cities such as Rome where the restaurants don't really get hopping until 10 pm.
