Modena Balsamic Vinegar tour/tasting recs?

We'll be visiting the center of Modena and would like to stop at a family run balsamic vinegar facility, learn about it and taste. Any recommendations? We won't have a car, so either walking up to 20 mins, or bus. Thanks

I did this one last year.

For the Vinegar Lunch & Tasting, my B&B owners inquired through WhatsApp if I needed any help with anything before arriving. I told them I had booked “Modena: Balsamic Lunch with Vinegar Cellar Tour & Tasting” with Gambigliani Zoccoli Acetaia”. She replied that this was the best one, plus they’re friends with them. That’s a good sign! I contacted GZA through WhatApp, and they offer a free shuttle from the train station out to their place - very nice! There were 11 of us who met at their location. The attic tour of the barrels, the lunch paired with the 25-year old & 12-year old balsamic vinegar - egg tortes, Parma meats, three ages of Parmigiana, wine, a Parmigiana risotto, and two desserts. The meal was finished with either limoncello or a walnut liquor- both homemade. This tour was well done and one I would recommend.

When I was planning a fall 2024 trip, a person who was on this forum at the time and living in Italy recommended Acetaia Malpighi. According to the website, this is a balsamic producer that offers free educational tours and tasting in one of their Modena locations. I believe you may need to reserve in advance and that it didn't appear to be walking distance from the train station but I didn't end up getting to Modena at all, so I did not get there. The website says "5 generations, one family" so it sounds like what you are asking for.

For Traditional Balsamic of Modena almost every producer is a family business. In fact is mostly a side activity of something else.
Told that, there are bigger producer that every year produce thousands of bottles, other ones only few tens.
Not having a car in the historical center there are several solutions for tastings (i greatly suggest "La Consorteria"), but almost no producers. The closer to the main square is Acetaia di Giorgio, but in the suburb. Not an expensive ride by taxy could be Acetaia Giusti (on of the biggest, together with Acetaia Malpighi). In the suburbs of Modena there are other ones that I don't directly know, like Filippi, Barbieri, Marchi.
If you do the visit on Saturday you can even visit the Acetaia Comunale, so the little production inside the belltower of the Townhall. A lot of towns and villages in the province of Modena produce their own little quantity of Traditional Balsamic.

Acetaia Marchi a family-run acetaia just outside the center of Modena.

Here is my post from 2024 on this thread https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy/modena-balsamic-tour-tasting

Check out Acetaia Marchi, just 10-15 minutes' drive from Piazza Grande and easily reachable by taxi for a modest fare.

This past April we did their group tour in English -- very interesting and informative. We saw every step of production and learned about the differences between Balsamic Vinegar of Modena IGP and Balsamic Vinegar Tradizionale of Modena DOP, both of which they produce. The tour started in their small vineyard, took us through their production facility, and ended with tastings of the many kinds of balsamic they produce. All for 15 Euros per person. You have to book ahead -- see website. We were already in Modena and just called them, but it looks like you can also book online.
On a previous visit to Modena, I did a tasting at Acetaia Giusti's store on the main piazza, and I also did the Commune's museum tour in Italian. If you don't understand Italian, I don't think you'll get much from the museum tour except what you can take in visually, i.e., the attic battery of barrels. Touring Acetaia Marchi was a much fuller experience, and I was surprised to prefer their balsamic over Giusti's which I had previously bought loyally. I have now switched. In fact, I bought so many different kinds of balsamic from Acetaia Marchi after our tour that I had to check a bag on the flight home. Am still enjoying my purchases :)

Thank you everyone, for the information and details. Sounds like people have had nice experiences and there are lots of options. We'll definitely look into these and determine if indeed, to do a taxi. We're starting the day in Parma for cheese, making our way to Modena and wanted a stop at a vinegar producer, then to the Ferrari museum. It's more than I prefer to fill into one day, especially w/out a car, so we shall see!
