Modena

I stayed at the Real Fini and thought it was great. I got a great deal on venere.com for 60 Euro per night.

Not sure if a hostel is an option for you, but we stayed at the Hostel San Filippo Neri, about a 5 minute walk from the train station. Pros: excellent price, super clean, airy and bright, friendly and helpful staff, short walk to the heart of Modena where you will find many shops, eateries, the cathedral, etc. Cons: they make you leave the hostel between 10a and 2p while they clean, the rooms are very basic, the "private" bathroom is down the hall (you have your own key however). But if you are on a budget and just looking for a place to crash, it's definately an option.
PS - while in Modena, you MUST go to K-2 ("kappa due") gelateria.
